When Gravity Fails

Lese gerade zum 2. Mal in meinem Leben George Alec Effingers (1947-2002) When Gravity Fails, den ersten Roman aus der Marid-Audran-Trilogy (auf das Marid müsste eigentliche in Circumflex, aber ich kann es zum Teufel nochmal auf meiner Lap-Tastatur nicht finden), von 1986. A Fire in the Sun ist der zweite und The Exile Kiss. Ich hab damals die miesen Heyne-Übersetzungen auf Deutsch gelesen, der 3. Teil ist dann nicht mal erschienen. Mann, hat mich das geärgert. Und als ich dann gut genug Englisch konnte, gab es die Bücher nicht mehr. Die neue Auflage/Reprint ist sehr schön gemacht, schönes Format, schöne Gestaltung. Und ich muss sagen, der Inhalt ist noch immer weit über vielen Texten neueren Datums und ein wenig bekanntes Cyberpunkt-Highlight. Schon auf Seite 23 was gefunden, was ich gleich mal zitieren muss:

"The world doesn't need an overpopulated, starving, spanish-speaking India in the Western Hemisphere [damit meint er Lateinamerika]. Spain, their mother country, tried Islam and said a polite no-thank you, and their national character sublimed right off into nothingness. That's Allah punishing them."

Toll. Drei Sätze und alles dazu gesagt. Bumm. Alles aus der First-Person-Perspektive von Marid Audran. Wie bei einer Kulturtauchfahrt bewegt sich Effinger durch die arabische Welt, als wäre er selbst Araber. Alles, was bei uns katholisch oder calvinistisch ist, ist bei ihm der Koran und die Tradition. Funktioniert unglaublich gut, vor allem und als Erstes aber wegen Marid -- ein sympatisches Arschloch, der sich Drogen und Stimmungsschaltkreise ins Hirn einfährt wie andere Leute Kaffee trinken. Ich würde die Trilogie in eine Reihe mit Gibsons Neuromancer-Trilogy und Stephensons Snow Crash sowie Sterlings Schismatrix stellen.

Ansonsten hat Effinger noch ne Menge geschrieben (http://scifan.com/writers/ee/EffingerAGeorge.asp), davon kenn ich aber nur Wölfe der Erinnerung, und das ist auch schon lange her.

Für Juni 2007 ist ein Sammelband mit The Wolves of Memory und sieben Kurzgeschichten von ihm angekündigt. Hier der Blurb dazu:
